Oct 2005 Message from the President

Oct 24, 2005

Wow ! School has just begun and at Doane we are already thinking about next year. When does it ever stop? I certainly hope that your summer was seamless and you had time to enjoy the sunshine. This summer your NeASFAA Board of Directors gathered in York for a day of business. These items of business included purchasing new lap top computers for the treasurer's office and the secretary, as well as many updates from the committee chairs. As many of you may know, Peggy Tvrdy is now working for CitiBank. This meant that we . . .

President's Corner

Dec 14, 2011

November 2010 NeASFAA Friends, We are blessed to work with and for people who have made education a priority, and in helping them we help our communities, state, country, and even the world.  No matter how stressed, or tired, or crabby I find myself, I do not have to look far to be reminded that it is all worthwhile.  It is so meaningful to help students find ways to get closer to their goals.  It is truly rewarding to visit with parents and know that you have given them tools to help their children.  I . . .

From the President.....

Hopefully as we all returned home after a great 40 th Anniversary Spring Conference . . your desk wasn’t piled too high with work to get back to . . or even worse a message to call your President ASAP regarding your preferred lender list!  Perhaps my hopes are too much to expect.  But nonetheless, I must believe that you are at least refreshed from the Conference. Truly that is what NeASFAA is all about.  We had the chance to see each other and most especially encourage one another as the headlines kept . . .

Oct 2006 Letter from the President

Oct 31, 2006

When friends ask why I like working in financial aid, I give the usual responses of helping students and contributing to the good of society.  The other answer is I love the constant change of our day to day rules and regulations.  Now after this last year, I wish for a little less change and a little more stability.  The implementation of the HERA Act has put our offices into constant change, anxiety and stress.  Are we reading these regulations correctly?  Do you know how to read a high . . .

Between counseling students, verifying files and certifying loans I hope you left some space in your thoughts about the ever elusive Reauthorization. It appears we need to remind Congress of our wishes and dreams that didn't get filled this past . . .

GETTING TO KNOW YOU . . . We asked some members of NeASFAA the following question: "What is your New Year’s Resolution and how are you going to make it come true or tell us about a past New Year’s Resolution and how you made it come true?" Terri Graham from Hastings College said, "I don't usually do New Year's Resolutions because I hate starting out my year with a guilty conscience. If I were a resolution maker though, I would resolve to keep my mouth shut a little longer. It's amazing what comes . . .

GETTING TO KNOW YOU . . . Recently, NeASFAA had their spring conference in Kearney, NE. We asked a few members, "What did you enjoy most about the conference"? Doug Watson, Midland Lutheran College: "The conference was a first-class event. It was great to celebrate our history and exciting to look to NEASFAA's future. GETTING TO KNOW YOU . . . At this busy time of year we'd like to offer a humorous break, so we are highlighting a few of our embarrassing financial aid moments. Enjoy! Shirley Huttenmaier (Southeast Community College-Beatrice): "I remember misplacing a loan check (well, I didn't remember misplacing it) and having to call the lender and tell them we never received the check. Some time later it was found stuck to the bottom of the phone on my desk. Then I had to send the check back with an apology for asking . . .

GETTING TO KNOW YOU . . . I’d like to paint a little picture for you. In fact, I’d like to make you a part of it, so if you would, please hang around for a couple of paragraphs or so. You are the financial aid director in a very busy two-person shop, a working farm wife, the mother of two children, and a very active member of your state professional association. You begin the 25-mile drive to work around 7 a.m., and though you really do like your “regular” job, there frequently just isn’t enough time to keep . . .

From the President   December 2003 Happy Holidays! As we reach the end of another calendar year, it is a time to reflect upon the year that has past and also a time to look forward to the exciting new year ahead. During the past year, many of us have taken the time to attend conferences and training events offered at the state, regional and national levels. In the September Newsletter, I had expressed my hopes that we would not lose sight of how valuable these opportunities are - especially in . . .

From the President   June 2003 I'd like to begin this column by telling you how much I'm looking forward to the year ahead! We had a very productive Board of Directors Retreat in May - great ideas were exchanged and we have awesome committees. If you have not had the opportunity to serve on a NeASFAA committee or run for a NeASFAA office, I would strongly encourage you to consider that next year. It really is a great way to get involved. I'd like to share the following "list" that I think is . . .

FROM THE PRESIDENT by Vicki Kucera It is with mixed emotions that I write this final 'letter from the president'. It's been an incredibly busy year and part of me is glad that will soon come to an end. But there is another part of me that has enjoyed this past year and the wonderful people I've worked so closely with so much that it will be hard to pass that gavel in a couple of months. But pass it I shall. Thanks to everybody who contributed to another successful Countdown To College. Mary Sommers and . . .

From the President   September 2003 It hardly seems possible that summer is over and we're already into the swing of a new academic year. Each new year brings challenges, but also opportunities. Within our state and regional associations, we will be given several opportunities for professional growth and development. As budgets become tighter, I know it's tempting to cut expenses by eliminating travel and sacrificing training events and conferences. At the same time it is because of the unique . . .

Message from the President   June 2004 Not knowing what the process involved the naïve woman said yes when asked to volunteer for what she thought was going to be a simple, relaxing job. She hadn't read the handbook very well when they gave it to her. She attended meetings when it fit her schedule and listened with the concentration of a pre-schooler as decisions were made and plans were set forth for the group's activities. It was only after the pats on the back and thank-you's were said that the . . .

From the President   March 2004 As I write my final article " From the President ", it seems hard to believe that almost a year has past since the gavel was passed to me. This time has gone by quickly and I've really enjoyed the opportunity to serve NeASFAA in this role. It has been a privilege to work with a great Board of Directors and dedicated committee chairs and committee members. I thank them, and all of you, for your support - it really has made a difference.
